Is a stem cell clinic in Panama better than one in Colombia? Neither country is better by default. Stem Cell Institute in Panama City publishes an adult package from USD 26,900 that includes hotel and transfers, while in Medellín, Colombia, our treatment is priced per cell dose, from about USD 2,362 to USD 10,080, with flights and lodging separate. What should decide it is the clinic: how its cells are processed and certified, whether a physician reviews your case first, and how honestly it talks about the evidence.
This is a side-by-side look at both options, written by a Medellín clinic, so we stick to what each side publishes and tell you what to ask either one.
Stem cell therapy in Panama: what is offered
One stem cell clinic in Panama that publishes its prices is Stem Cell Institute in Panama City. According to its website, it was founded by Neil Riordan, PhD, has offered stem cell therapy since 2006, works with the Medistem Panama research center, and uses mesenchymal stem cells derived from donated umbilical cords (Stem Cell Institute). It lists conditions such as autism, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, heart failure and sports injuries.
The clinic’s published price starts at USD 26,900 for adults and USD 15,825 for children, and includes VIP customs clearance at the airport, ground transportation and a stay at the Hilton Panama (source).
The group also publishes research. In a 2018 safety and feasibility study, 20 people with multiple sclerosis received seven intravenous infusions of umbilical cord cells over seven days; no serious adverse events were reported (Riordan et al., 2018). That is useful safety information, but a study without a control group cannot show whether the treatment works, which is why the authors called for further investigation.
Stem cell therapy in Colombia: what we offer in Medellín
Treatment at our clinic is led by Dr. Catalina Henao, a medical doctor and surgeon from Universidad CES in Medellín, ISSCA-certified in point-of-care regenerative medicine, working with Dr. Camilo Hernando Arango Orejuela and Dr. Sebastián Botero. You can read Dr. Henao’s background here.
- Three protocols: anti-aging (mesenchymal stem cells, exosomes and PRP), full-body regeneration given by IV, and sports injury and recovery. Details are on our protocols page.
- Pricing by cell dose, from 10 to 150 million cells, converted from pesos every Monday (last update: October 19, 2026).
- A typical stay of five to seven days, a bilingual team, and remote follow-up once you are home.
- For the cells themselves, ask us where they are processed and for the lab’s INVIMA certification. How stem cell therapy is regulated in Colombia explains what that certification means.

A package price and a per-dose price are not directly comparable. When you request quotes, ask each clinic for the number of cells, the number of applications, what imaging review happens before you travel, and what follow-up is included. Our full price list:

Regulation: what approval does and does not mean
Rules for cell therapies vary a lot across Latin America. A 2022 review found very heterogeneous legislation in the region: Brazil and Argentina have regulations covering manufacture, quality and marketing, while Mexico does not recognize or authorize any cell as therapy. The authors called for common standards because the region is a major medical tourism destination (Orozco-Solares et al., 2022).
Whatever a local regulator allows, these treatments are not FDA-approved. The FDA says no regenerative medicine therapy is approved for orthopedic conditions, autism or neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and it has received reports of blindness, tumor formation and infections linked to unapproved products (FDA). More in our FDA guide. The ISSCR’s patient guide lists good questions to ask any clinic, in any country.
When surgery is the better choice
In either country, a responsible clinic should tell you when cells are the wrong tool: a complete tendon tear that has retracted, a joint that keeps giving way, advanced arthritis with deformity, or nerve compression causing weakness or numbness that is getting worse. These usually need surgery, and stem cell therapy should not delay it. If a clinic offers to treat everything, treat that as a warning sign.
Where stem cell therapy fits
Good candidates have ongoing joint, tendon or back pain, have tried conservative care, and want a non-surgical option while understanding that results vary and the therapy is not FDA-approved. People with active cancer or infection, or with problems that need surgery, are generally not candidates; see who is not a candidate for stem cell therapy. If you are still deciding on a country, our guide to the best countries for stem cell therapy compares the rules in the US, Europe, Japan and Latin America.

Frequently asked questions
How much does stem cell therapy cost in Panama?
Stem Cell Institute in Panama City publishes prices starting at USD 26,900 for adults and USD 15,825 for children, with airport customs clearance, ground transportation and a hotel stay included, according to its website. Confirm the current price and what your package includes directly with the clinic.
Is stem cell therapy cheaper in Colombia than in Panama?
On published prices, yes: every dose on our Medellín price list, from 10 to 150 million cells, costs less than the starting price of that Panama adult package. The Panama price includes hotel and transfers, and ours does not, so compare the cell dose and inclusions, not just the total.
What kind of stem cells does the Panama clinic use?
Stem Cell Institute states on its website that its mesenchymal stem cells come from donated umbilical cords. For our clinic in Medellín, ask us where the cells are processed and for the lab’s INVIMA certification.
Is stem cell therapy in Panama or Colombia FDA-approved?
No. Treatments given in either country are not FDA-approved for orthopedic, neurological or chronic pain conditions. The FDA states that no regenerative medicine therapy is approved for conditions such as osteoarthritis, back pain, multiple sclerosis or autism.
How do I choose between a clinic in Panama and one in Colombia?
Compare the cell dose, how the cells are processed and certified, whether a physician reviews your imaging before you pay, what follow-up you get at home, and how honestly the clinic describes the evidence. Those matter more than the country.
