How much does a stem cell knee injection cost?

For a knee, the dose is chosen after the physician reviews your X-ray or MRI, so the price falls within the list above: from about USD 2,375 (10 million stem cells) to USD 10,132 (150 million stem cells). You will know the exact dose and price before you travel.

For reference, US clinics publish ranges of USD 3,500 to 8,000 per knee for bone marrow (BMAC) treatments and USD 5,000 to 10,000 for fat-derived (adipose) treatments, with complex protocols reaching USD 25,000 (source). The same applies to the shoulder, hip, back and other joints: the dose, not the joint, sets the price.

What matters as much as the price is who treats you: at Stem Cell Medellin, the physician who reviews your case, Dr. Catalina Henao, is the one who plans the procedure and follows up with you after you fly home.

Does insurance or Medicare cover stem cell therapy?

Medicare covers stem cell transplantation only for specific conditions, mainly certain blood cancers and blood and immune disorders, under its national coverage determination for stem cell transplantation (CMS NCD 110.23). Regenerative stem cell injections for joint pain, back pain or anti-aging are not on that list.

Private insurers generally do not cover them either, because no stem cell product is FDA-approved for orthopedic or anti-aging uses (FDA consumer alert). Treatment in Colombia is paid out of pocket. If you plan to use HSA or FSA funds, ask your plan administrator before you travel: eligibility depends on your plan.

Why stem cell prices vary so much between clinics

  • Number of cells. Doses range from a few million to hundreds of millions of cells, and price usually scales with the dose.
  • Cell source. Bone marrow, fat (adipose) and umbilical cord cells are processed differently and are priced differently.
  • Number of areas and applications. One joint is not the same as several, or as a series of applications.
  • What is included. Physician evaluation, imaging, lab testing of the cells and follow-up are sometimes included and sometimes extra.
  • Who treats you. A physician who reviews your case, performs the procedure and follows up with you is part of what you are paying for.

Before you compare quotes, ask every clinic for a written list of what the price covers. Our guide to stem cell therapy in Colombia includes a 10-point checklist for choosing a clinic.
