Can you increase stem cells naturally? Partly, and mostly for a short time. In human studies, exercise releases stem and progenitor cells into the bloodstream for a few hours and expands muscle stem cells for one to three days after strength training, and quitting smoking restores circulating progenitor cells (Dewi et al., 2023; Kondo et al., 2004). The striking results for fasting and sleep come mainly from mice. No habit, food or supplement has been shown to reverse stem cell aging in people.
Does your body keep making stem cells?
Yes. Adults carry tissue-specific stem cells in the bone marrow, muscle, gut, skin and other organs, and they replace worn-out cells throughout life. What changes with age is their performance: aging tissues gradually lose their capacity to maintain and repair themselves, which researchers attribute to changes in the stem cells, in their surrounding “niche” and in signals circulating in the blood (Oh, Lee and Wagers, Nature Medicine 2014). That is why stem cells are not “immortal” in practice, even though they can renew themselves. For where these cells come from and how they differ, see where stem cells come from.
You cannot make stem cells at home. Creating or growing stem cells requires a laboratory; what you can influence is the environment your own cells work in.
What the evidence shows, habit by habit
| Habit | What was found | Who was studied | How strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise | Circulating CD34+ stem cells rose after aerobic or resistance exercise and returned to baseline within 6 hours; muscle stem cells (Pax7+) rose to about 50% above baseline 24 to 72 hours after resistance exercise | Humans: meta-analysis of 26 studies (494 people) for CD34+ cells and 20 studies (370 people) for muscle stem cells | Moderate, short-term effect |
| Not smoking | Smokers had fewer circulating progenitor cells; levels rose rapidly after quitting and fell again when smoking resumed | Humans: 15 smokers, 14 non-smokers | Small study, consistent direction |
| Fasting | A 24-hour fast boosted intestinal stem cell function; repeated prolonged fasting promoted blood stem cell regeneration | Mice (young and aged) | Lab evidence only |
| Sleep | Fragmented sleep changed blood cell production and led to larger arterial plaques | Mice | Lab evidence only |
Exercise: the best-supported way to stimulate stem cells
Exercise is the one habit with solid human data. A 2023 meta-analysis found that both aerobic and resistance exercise produced a medium increase in circulating CD34+ bone-marrow-derived cells, which faded within six hours, and a large increase in muscle stem cells a day after resistance training. The effect on muscle stem cells was actually larger in adults over 50 than in younger adults (Dewi et al.).
Two caveats. First, these are temporary rises measured after a single session; no study here shows that regular training permanently raises your stem cell count. Second, the benefits of exercise for health and aging do not depend on stem cells alone. The practical message is simple: regular aerobic work plus strength training is worth doing for many reasons, and this is one of them.
Fasting, sleep and smoking: what is proven and what is not
- Fasting. In mice, a 24-hour fast improved intestinal stem cell function in both young and old animals (Mihaylova et al.), and cycles of prolonged fasting promoted blood stem cell regeneration and reversed an age-related imbalance in blood cell production (Cheng et al.). These are important lab findings, not a human protocol. Prolonged fasting is not safe for everyone, including people with diabetes, those on certain medications, pregnant women and anyone with a history of eating disorders, so discuss it with your doctor first.
- Sleep. In mice, fragmented sleep increased production of inflammatory blood cells and accelerated atherosclerosis (McAlpine et al.). Good sleep matters for many reasons; whether it measurably changes stem cells in humans has not been shown.
- Smoking. This one is human data: circulating progenitor cells were lower in smokers, rose quickly after quitting and dropped again when smoking resumed (Kondo et al.). If you smoke, stopping is the most concrete step on this page.
- Supplements. None of the studies above tested a supplement. If a product claims to “activate” or “multiply” your stem cells, ask for the human trial behind the claim.
What natural approaches cannot do
Healthy habits support the cells you have; they do not rebuild a worn joint, repair a torn tendon or treat a diagnosed disease. Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss or new pain deserve a medical evaluation, not a new routine. And when an orthopedic problem has a clear surgical answer, such as a complete tendon rupture or an unstable joint, surgery remains the better choice.
Where stem cell therapy fits
Stem cell therapy is a different question: instead of nudging your own cells, a physician administers a dose of cells. At Stem Cell Medellin, the anti-aging and longevity protocol combines mesenchymal stem cells, exosomes and PRP, and the full-body protocol uses intravenous application; our guides to stem cell IV therapy and what full-body therapy does inside your body explain both. The evidence for anti-aging uses in humans is early, the treatment is not FDA approved for these purposes, and it does not replace exercise, sleep or quitting smoking.
Good candidates are generally healthy adults with realistic expectations who already have the basics in place. It is not for people with active cancer or active infection; our page on who is not a candidate lists the rest. Pricing is per dose of cells, from about USD 2,362 for 10 million cells; flights and accommodation are separate.
Next step
If you are considering a longevity protocol, send your health history for a free case review with Dr. Catalina Henao. She will tell you honestly whether it makes sense for you, and if it does, you receive a written quote before you buy flights; most patients plan 5 to 7 days in Medellín. Frequently asked questions
Does your body produce stem cells?
Yes. Adults have stem cells in the bone marrow, muscle, gut, skin and other tissues that keep replacing cells throughout life. Their function declines with age, which is part of why tissues repair more slowly as we get older.
What is the fastest natural way to boost stem cells?
Exercise. In human studies, a single session of aerobic or resistance exercise raises circulating stem cells for a few hours, and resistance training increases muscle stem cells for one to three days.
Does fasting increase stem cells?
In mice, a 24-hour fast and cycles of prolonged fasting improved intestinal and blood stem cell function. That has not been shown in humans, and prolonged fasting is not safe for everyone, so talk to your doctor first.
Are stem cells immortal?
Not in practice. Adult stem cells can renew themselves, but they age along with their environment, and their capacity to maintain and repair tissue gradually declines.
Can supplements activate stem cells?
The human studies we cite tested exercise and smoking cessation, not supplements. Treat claims that a pill activates or multiplies stem cells with caution unless they come with published human trials.
